The Dubai Mall, a leading shopping and leisure destination, welcomed more than 54 million visitors in 2011, marking a rise of 15 per cent over the visitor numbers for 2010, and becoming the world’s most-visited mall.

The number of visitors to The Dubai Mall is more than the number of annual tourists to New York City in 2011, reported at 50.2 million, according the official New York City website.

The visitor numbers exceed the annual visitors to Las Vegas – expected to welcome 39.2 million people in 2011 and Los Angeles at 26.3 million and also surpasses the visitor arrivals to all landmark leisure destinations and theme parks in the world including Times Square (39.2 million); Central Park (38 million); and Niagara Falls (22.5 million) among others.

Retail sales across the various outlets in the mall also have reported growth at about 35 per cent on average compared with 2010.

“The Dubai Mall’s record-breaking footfall elevates its position as the world’s most visited tourism and shopping destination, topping the annual visitor arrivals to all landmark attractions anywhere in the world,” said Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Emaar Properties.

“The visitor footfall is matched by the increase in retail sales, highlighting the contribution of The Dubai Mall to Dubai’s retail sector.”

“The mall’s varied choice of retail outlets - with the world’s leading brands operating their flagship stores or marking their Middle East debut at The Dubai Mall - underlines its premier position as the must-visit destination for the booming consumer segment not just in the Middle East but across the region, spanning South Asia, Africa, CIS countries and Europe,” he added.

Driving the growth of The Dubai Mall was the creation of the $20 billion Downtown Dubai, described as ‘The Centre of Now.’ The flagship development of Emaar Properties features Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, seven world-class hotels, thousands of residential apartments, modern offices and The Dubai Fountain, among other attractions.

“The various components of Downtown Dubai have positioned this flagship development of Emaar as a premier lifestyle destination boosting the growth of the city’s tourism, hospitality, retail and other economic sectors,” added Alabbar.

Offering the full breadth of retail choices, the mall’s spread of 1,200 outlets meets all shopping requirements of visitors – from fashion wear to accessories, electronic appliances to home furnishing, the latest communication gadgets to audio-visual choices, books, jewellery and much more. The mall also has over 160 food and beverage outlets.

Adding further to the appeal of the mall to visitors from across the world are its spectacular leisure attractions such as Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, which holds the Guinness World Record for the largest acrylic viewing panel; the Olympic sized Dubai Ice Rink; the region’s first SEGA Republic – the largest of its kind indoor theme park; KidZania, the only one of its kind children’s edutainment centre in the entire Middle East region; and the 22-screen Reel Cinemas, one of the region’s largest megaplexes that can seat over 2,800 people.

The spectacular Dubai Fountain in the waterfront promenade of the mall attracts thousands of visitors every day, and the mall also hosted several thousand visitors who attended the New Year’s Celebrations 2012 organised by Emaar in Downtown Dubai.

US dollar plummets ahead of debt-limit vote

The US dollar weakened against most of its major peers, as American President Barack Obama and the Congress remain at odds over their competing plans to cut spending and raise the debt limit.

Today's vote will determine whether the law makers should raise the US debt limit, in an attempt to prevent the world's largest economy from defaulting on its debt and receive a credit-rating downgrade. Meanwhile, the debt crisis has become a hot political issue as both parties are preparing for the November 2012 election, during which Obama is assumed to seek a second term.

Consequently, the greenback slid to as weak as 77.66 yen, a level unseen since March 17, before trading at 77.68 yen as of 7:23 am in London this morning. The dollar also fetched $1.4502 per euro and $1.6439 against the pound.

"The weaker dollar direction is a more powerful influence than strong gains in growth-oriented currencies", said Greg Gibbs, a foreign-exchange strategist in Sydney at Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc. The market is factoring in higher risk of a downgrade of the US's credit rating, he added.

The US currency also sank to a record low of 87.65 cents per New Zealand dollar before trading at 87.51 cents, down by 0.5 percent on the day. It dropped by 0.2 percent to 80.01 Swiss centimes after dropping to an all-time low of 79.97 centimes.

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp will raise its stake in Saudi’s Rotana Group, the media company controlled by Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, in an investment worth $35m.

News Corp will exercise 50 percent of its option in Rotana to raise its stake to 14.53 percent, the Saudi media group said in an emailed statement Wednesday.

News Corp retains the right to exercise the remaining 50 percent of the option until November 2012, the statement said.

“News Corp has an unrivalled record in development businesses of scale around the world. This investment will help to build Rotana’s presence across the region,” said Prince Alwaleed.
Rotana owns the Arab world's largest record label and about 40 percent of the region's movies, and operates a number of free-to-air television channels.

Prince Alwaleed holds a stake of about seven percent in News Corp through his investment vehicle Kingdom Holding Co.

News Corp acquired an initial 9.09 stake in Rotana in May 2010, in an investment worth around $70m. The media giant had another 18 months after the completion of the deal to double its stake to 18.2 percent for another $70m.
