What motivates people to share their expertise?
Earlier this year Abonnet (www.abonnet.com) did a small but unscientific study via LinkedIn to find out what motivates people to share their expertise. At that time we were setting up our service and wanted to get some data to help prioritize feature development.
Roughly 50 people replied to the survey. You might think that main (and perhaps only) motivation for an advisor to use time to share expertise would be money. Well that wasn’t the case with this group. Biggest motivation was Personal development that was selected by 59% of responders. It’s actually quite easy to believe in this. Typically you learn best when you share you own knowledge and get feedback from others.
Second biggest motivator chosen by advisors was Indirect earning potential that was selected by 54%. If you are looking for a job, target for investment or new client you will increase your chances by first showing your skills in target company’s board or advisory board.
Desire to share expertise (48%) was third most selected motivating factor whereas Direct earning potential (37%) was last.
But what do you think – is it fair to generalize these results and what would motivate you?
