In 2004 I developed the world first digital photo frame. For a person who started inventing for the first time, I thought I had the world first “mind breaking idea”. I remember telling my wife about the digital photo frame idea, she laughed and said that it was a silly idea and that people would never buy it.
I persisted with the idea (with no electrical background), I decided to pull a computer monitor apart and decided to re-draw the monitor into a smaller version. A photo frame size. My digital photo was to use Blue-tooth technology, which meant a house hold can have a number of frames around the household using one memory cards to re-distribute the image throughout the frames similar to a screen saver.
I was so excited with designs, I decided to contact different companies around the world (Apple, IBM, HP and others) if they would be interested in my world first digital photo frame idea.
Most responded with the view that I should forward all my designs to them and that they will not sign a confidentiality agreement to protect my product (the product was not patent because I could not afford the world patent cost) and that they could guarantee protection for my designs. Also by sending my designs to them, I would have no legal ownership of the designs.
After exhausting months of effort to try to find a potential investor to finance and develop my product, I finally found a Hong Kong based business online that sounded interested with my idea. Silly me, I openly disclosed all my designs to them having thought a business confidentiality agreement with them was sufficient enough to protect my designs.
Three months after constant discussion with the Hong Kong business, they terminated all contact, and I they disappeared and I was never able to communicate with them. I was devastated that I was so trusting and careless and naive in disclosing my designs without legal advice.
A year later I discovered that a major Australian Electrical store in Sydney had the Digital Photo frame (average photo size) for sale for $129.00 Australian dollars and gradually got more expensive for larger frames. I was devastated and so angry with myself for been careless with my designs. The realty was, I was not able to legally do anything about my failure to protect my product. The digital photo frame was becoming a global success product.
